Creating a CNAME for your Landr mobile landing page or website is a simple way to get all the benefits of our technology, while maintaining a strong brand association to your business, organization, or campaign. Creating a CNAME will allow you to use a custom domain name, like “m.mycompany.com” to promote your new mobile website. Google’s Support provides a great article on how to create a CNAME with various hosting providers:
You will want to create a new CNAME record for the “m” subdomain, and point it to your custom Landr domain. For example, on the server controlling the DNS for your domain, you would make the following entry, replacing “your-domain” with the subdomain your Landr site uses:
m –> your-domain.landr.co

What about .mobi?
The “.mobi” extension was introduced a long time ago, with the simple idea to make mobile web content all have a similar extension (ex. yoursite.mobi). There are several good reasons why this failed to ever take off, and why we suggest using a CNAME instead of many other methods.
- • The “m.” prefix to a company website is the most common way of getting users to mobile content- it is used the most, recognized the most, and still holds a strong brand awareness throughout promotions and print material.
- • Buying new domain extensions cost money, and it creates a mess to manage multiple domains and extensions.
- • A lot of “explanatory” domain extensions (.biz, .tv, .mobi) either have a marketing initiative behind them, or are simply misguided. Technology moves too fast for you to get sucked into any one of these schemes, so for now, using the domain you already have is the best option.
